Sortition & democracy
Do we have enough of social platform influence on our elections ? How about election by lot ?
Platforms
After a recent clash between Twitter and Facebook on Trump’s tweet Mark Zuckenberg stated that his platform is open to content Twitter marked as promoting violence and they will not take any further action. It’s nothing new to state that the content we see in the news feed is tailored to our profile by algorithms. And it has been proved that agencies tend to manipulate the public opinion by using profiled advertising or fake accounts on the platform. How accurate can the democratic election be ? Is it a war between marketing and election teams at the end ? How much freedom do we have when we select the party and vote ?
Sortition
Election by lot. Instead of letting people vote, why won’t we establish a selection process to pick the most suitable set of diverse candidates based on expertise and let the randomized process decide on who will take a lead in making a proposal and decide which law to apply ? The concept is not new. Initially established in ancient Greece in the times when democracy was born. It can be a multilayered approach when proposals are challenged with other groups and again another group can go with a final word. Shorter rotations than a common election and no more voting which is driven by factors that leverage on weakness of human mind.
